How do you deal with being your own client?

Postby ricky » Sun Nov 01, 2009 1:28 pm

It's driving me crazy! Wait, let me rephrase that, I'M driving me crazy!

When working on person projects, I can never seem to be happy with a design. I work for a good few days on a design, only to wake up thinking.. "oh f*** this I dont like it anymore" and fall back to sqaure one!

My question is, does anyone have the same problem, if so, how do you deal with it? What are your techniques? What advice can you give? I'm sick of not being content with my own work. I'm actually a decent designer too!

I also have this nightmare... I think it must be a fear of rejection. I decided that I was unable to make my own site so I bought a template!

I don't think I've ever spent so long designing a website as many times as my own!

To get my portfolio designed and launched, a colleague and I had a 'race' where we had to get our portfolio's live by a certain date.

It helped to set a deadline that everyone knew about. It forced me to make actual decisions rather than keep mulling over them for months. The fact my colleagues knew about the deadline motivates you to make sure there's something there!

In theory, if your portfolio is live and isn't what you expected, the fact that the world can see it forces you to improve it more quickly.

I had a similar problem then heard a quote from Voltaire:

The perfect is the enemy of the good

I found 2 problems with this process:

1. there are no creative limitations. since you can do anything you end up spending a lot of time trying to be as creative as possible.

2. you want to make it perfect since it represents your business and spend a lot of time searching for the perfect solution.

don't let the endless search for the perfect solution become the enemy of the good solution. no matter what you do you'll get bored of it soon enough anyway.

I over came this by desperately needing money to pay my rent, and without a decent portfolio nobody would employ me. This mean't I had about 2 - 3 days max to create one and start promoting myself. I guess the key to this was the timescale was set for me. But also bare in mind that any portfolio is better than no portfolio.

Just wanted to say that's a great idea!

On point! I have this exact same problem and as a result my website is still "under construction". I would spend a whole day working on a theme, sleeping knowing I am satisfied and then waking up to think... hmm I could do this better, starting from scratch!

I think for my "final" design, I am setting myself a launch deadline (a very generous 2-3 weeks) and just accepting the design I can put together. Furthermore, I might consider drafting some key words and write some lines as to what I wish to achieve with my design and hopefully if I can meet these criteria it will satisfy me that I have done a good job!

It's a known fact that you are your worst critic. We all experience your issue. The problem is that in the end you get tired by recreating your portfolio over and over again and in the end you're satisfied by the result not because you like it very much but because you don't want to work on it anymore.
