Hi all,
Horizontal or vertical, does not matter a lot. But the space below the masthead where horizontal navigation is placed is most visited space in the page, so I would preffer to have a horizontal menu as a primary navigation and have left navigation as a secondary navigation.
In case you have huge categories/subcategories, then a proper information architecture should be done so that you can arrive at a compact navigation. If it still comes out to be a huge list, then there are ways to tackle with it, try using mega menus. This solution will help you to show more options to user in a compact form, please see the image below.

And believe me, number of clicks to your destination does not matter now a days, What matters more is how hard those clicks are
