Browser support - PNG transparency

Postby Harland » Mon Feb 23, 2009 6:24 pm

Hi guys
I'm working on a site that would really benefit from the use of PNG transparency but I'm kind of reluctant to use it. Does anyone know which browsers don't actually support this?

And there are also issues with using PNG-fixes (like not working for positioned background images) but it depends on how complicated you want to get.

True IE 6 doesn't support .PNG and there are not any good java script PNG fixes.

This is a complete list of browser image support http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers#Image_format_support.

These links provide an alternative method http://24ways.org/2007/supersleight-transparent-png-in-ie6,http://www.alistapart.com/stories/pngopacity/...

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks, that's great. The Wikipedia table is exactly what I was looking for.

That is incorrect. IE6 supports PNG-8, just not the alpha-transparency that comes with PNG-24.

I use this to get my transparent pngs working in ie6:

If you have to use background-repeat or background-position use the first link on this page:

I would just give people using IE6 gif images instead with an alternative style sheet and tell them to upgrade if they want to use the site. I would read To Hell With Bad Browsers from Jeffery Zeldman(a god in our industry). The article explains how by fully supporting old browsers you are holding the rest of the internet back.

J.Z. wrote that article in 2001, and within it, surmised that "In six months, a year, or two years at most, all sites will be designed with these standards." ... which is has sadly not come to pass. A great many sites are now designed and built with ever-increasing shades of compliance, but browser capabilities still plod along slowly, playing a reluctant game of catch-up.
I blame the limitations of plain text!
