Breadcrumb as page heading

Postby toma » Wed Nov 04, 2009 5:29 am

Hello,

I am designing a new website, and I am thinking of merging the breadcrumb and the page heading.
The breadcrumb would therefore be displayed in a large font size toward the center of the page.
I was wondering if you had tried that before, or came across it, and what you thought of it...
thank you

I don't prefer to do it, but if you do, there are a few things you can do to keep it lucid:

1. Place it carefully: don't crowd it, etc.
2. Keep the page title large and distinct from the rest of the crumbs.
3. Be sure to use the right H1/H2 tag

I blame the limitations of plain text!

Thank you for your answer / advice
I will give it a try and see if it works visually (it does on the wire frames)
As you say it might prove to be unpractical though

A breadcrumb navigation menu should definitely not be merged with a heading. A heading should introduce content, not make it up.

I suggest you follow the best practices instead:

I used the heading in the breadcrumb trail for our wallpaper site and still think it works well for our audience :P I think it simplifies the layout being able to see which product you're currently viewing, and how you arrived there, all in one go...

Keeping the visual style is fine, but it should definitely not be marked up as a heading.
