I would say the best one I've read (actually the only one I've read) would be Steve Krug's Don't Make Me Think. It is an easy read and humorous at times. The content is easy to understand and implement.

Jakob Nielsen's "Designning Web Usability" was for a long time considered as the usability-bible. I read it long ago and it had great insights. It's a bit outdated nowadays, but still worth a peek. But "Don't make me think" seems to be the better choice now.

Without a doubt I would recommend : Steve Krug's Don't Make Me Think

Its a great starter book for anyone who is new to usability within a websites design. I am a full time website designer and spend alot of my day devoting time to print design graduates who wish to jump into website design. I wouldn't know how to get them all started without this book!

You can buy it here : http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Make-Me-Thin ... 709&sr=8-1

I have to agree with the other posters, you can't beat... Steve Krug's Don't Make Me Think

Find it in a library - http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/61895021&referer=brief_results

The book is short, fun and to the point - but the advice and information is priceless.

I have to recommend this having been on one of David's training courses when I was with RBS (usability is a thing they actually do well in certain areas!)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/e-Commerce-Usab ... 940&sr=8-1

Although it says e-commerce (the publisher's recommendation as books with ecom in the title sell better apparently) it can be used on any type of site.

Hi all,

Another really good list of usability books recommended from the Staff of Boxes and Arrows:

http://www.boxesandarrows.com/view/our_favorite_books_recommendations_from_the_staff_of_boxes_and_arrows

When I first studied about usability I liked :
a) "Usability for the Web"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1558606580/ref=nosim/boxesandarrows-20

and b) “Designing Web Usability”
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/156205810X/ref=nosim/boxesandarrows-20 by Jacob Nielsen

For the Dutch. For my study I had to buy the next book: Website usability written by: Ward van der Put (ISBN: 90 430 1304 8)

An instructive book

The latest book I read is Universal Design for web applications, it's very easy to understand and to apply. It have, also, a lot of information about accessibility related to Mobile devices.

You can find it here: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Design-Web-Applications-Everyone/dp/0596518730/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234715347&sr=1-3

I agree with zenith Steve Krug's Don't Make Me Think is one of the best books around.
But still if you look for some web log's or websites you can also learn a lot about usability.

Like me most of you don't have access to an usability lab witch is expensive.
Following the usability guide lines makes sure you keep on the right path. ;)

Testing your website on users with Camtasia Studio for example will help you.
It ain't to expensive but can give you some vital information on usability.

You should check out 37 Signals - Defensive Design for the Web, it starts off with the fact that things WILL go wrong when it comes to customers using your website. It provides some guidelines into helping them get back on track with meaningful error messages, 404's, forms and search boxes.

Steve Krug's "Web Design: Don't Make Me Think" is my favourite

SitePoint also offer some interesting books, I'll probably get some soon.
