What font should I use for online print ?

Postby Cosmi » Thu Oct 08, 2009 2:03 pm

Hi everybody,

I know that people said serif fonts are for print and non-serif for web. That's true, but... What if you combine print with web ?

Currently I'm developing an online magazine looking like a real printed magazine. The only difference is that this will be online, not print. (an embed pdf with flash)

So, I am undecided. What font shall I use ? A serif font, because increase readibility or a sans-serif font, because it is more for web ? What you think will be the best choise ?

Best regards,
Cosmi

The reason why sans-serif fonts work better for the web -- in general -- is that they increase readability when used at small sizes.

An older article, but it looks like it still applies:

Personally, I would stick to sans-serif for body text, and perhaps use serif text as an accent for headers (where it will be larger.)

hey cosmi,

Going from what you've described the look of the pdf/flash mag to be, i would go with the serif font because it would look closer to the "real-life" magazine (if that was the aim), otherwise id stick to the sans serif as it 'might' look better.

if the pdf was made to be printed you could also make the printed version in a serif font and the online version a sans serif font. i dont really know how to do this myself, but im pretty sure you can do this easily with some code that does it for you automatically.

either way i find both just as easy to read even though they say its easier to read a sans serif online. break the rules... ?

Thanks guys, your information is very useful.

I will use a sans-serif font for body-text and titles (Aller) and a serif one for intro-text (Georgia), anyway, rarely used.

I use a 4-column structure and I'm sure this will increase readibility as well.

Cosmi.
