What do you memorize about a font?

Postby Althalos » Sat Aug 01, 2009 8:18 am

Hello
I've been trying to learn to better use typography in my designs. But I have a problem, namely that I can't memorize fonts and then recognize them later.

Let's pretend for example that I see a heading in Arial and an introduction written in Georgia on a website. I will recognize Arial on the t because the lowercase t has a piece sliced off at the top. And the top and bottom of its ys are perfectly aligned, straight and it has the exact same width all over. Georgia I will recognize on the little twist at the lower part of the y. But if these letters are not present I am lost, also these are not unique characteristics.

What do you memorize from a font to be able to recognize it later?

The general overall appearance of a font does it for me. It is like a face. With just the nose I don't recognize the person, but give me a picture of a face and I have no problem.

I recognize every webfont. If the font is not anti-aliased and it is a serif: 9 out of 10 times it is Georgia garantueed. The more unique and rare a font is the more I focus on just one element of the font for recognition (for example how far the stem of the lowercase "e" extends). But for webfonts such as Arial and Georgia I recognize them on sight, if more than 5 characters are present.

I might not be the only one doing this, but to be honest the easiest way for me to recognise a font is the letter 'a'.

with web fonts I just know by seeing a few characters, but that's what I work with every day, and there's a limited pool of possibilities...

outside of that it becomes a little more difficult, but you shouldn't be shooting for the ability to recognize as many typefaces as possible, just use what you feel 'says it best.'

I have my fonts organized by many different characteristics, decide upon a few, then narrow it down to the one you really want.

I also categorize each font according to character width, individual characters (a, i, t) , and style (like humanist types as opposed to the more ordinary looking sans-serif).
