Serif Fonts

Postby Jmz » Tue Feb 10, 2009 12:18 pm

I must admit, I dont use serif fonts as much as I should

Which serif fonts are best to use for headings? Preferably ones that everybody will be able to see.

There are only two decent web-safe serifs: Georgia and Times New Roman. I usually go with Georgia. There are a lot of good serif fonts out there, if you like to experiment in headings/graphics: I like Garamond and especially Rockwell.

Georgia rules the universe for a web-safe serif. Garamond is exceedingly sexy. Er...er....OK, hands up who thinks there needs to be a feature on serif fonts?!

I've been using the " Georgia, Times, "Times New Roman", serif" group in my designs. Never tried Garamond though.. Probably should do so...

As people are saying: Georgia and Times/Times New Roman.

Don't underestimate Times. Even if it might not be the fit for a project as a text-font it might do well as a heading. Times New Roman is a relatively tight font because it was meant for newspapers, but it can also works well in headings since tight lettering looks good in headings.

Depends on the impression you want to give.

If we're talking about print, and just pure readability, I like Bookman oldstyle or century schoolbook.

Palatino and garamond are good for a more traditional look.

For a modern look nothing beats bodoni.

I find the "e" in Times looks kludgy at a big size.

For web, Georgia is great.
