.htpasswd encryption method

Postby seventeen » Mon Aug 24, 2009 6:10 pm

Does anyone know about the encryption method that must be used for passwords in .htpasswd files?

I have used online password encryptors in the past, but a client is asking me about it and a quick google search returned nothing. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Actually, with a little more digging. I found an answer and rather than go on my way, figured I'd share it here incase anybody else was curious. I suppose its actually a rather trivial topic either way.

The password must be encrypted with the same method used by PHP's crypt() function which uses the UNIX DES-based algorithm.

Also, there is a unix executable installed with Apache called htpasswd that will encrypt it for you.
