Whats the best way to take a night photo.

Postby Daimz » Mon Feb 16, 2009 11:45 pm

I have recently got a new DSLR Sony A300 and I was wondering if anyone could share some tips on taking a good night photo so that it's not noisy?

If you want to eliminate noise, you'll have to use a tripod so that you can use a lower ISO setting. Depending on your tripod, a remote trigger can be useful as well (my cheap tripod vibrates too much if I touch the camera to trigger).

- (Most important) Find a good subject that would look superb. Look out for water (reflects !).
- Use a tripod or find something to support your camera
- Use a torch/laser light to experiment.

- Don't forget to be creative during all these. Try out things crazy things (Not dangerous things).

Here are a few of mine

The answer to that question really depends on what kind of night photo you want to take. It could be a cityscape, low-light portrait, light-painting, something abstract and creative ... the possibilities are limitless.

Generally my bag of tricks for a night photo include a tripod, flashlight, a few glowsticks, various pen lights, one or two flashes (SB-600 is fine) and a few friends to come along.
I blame the limitations of plain text!

Using a popup-flash without destroying the picture is hard. :) Don't do it unless you know exactly what you are doing. Off-camera flashes are more useful, but also hard to use effectively.

A flash is also completely useless when photographing a cityscape, because no flash has enough power to light a complete cityscape.

The key to successful night photography lies in a long exposure. We’re talking about exposures measured in seconds. When a long exposure is used, more light is allowed into the camera, allowing the details in your night photo to be captured.

The problem with using long exposures is that you may shake the camera, resulting in poor pictures. The way around this is to use a tripod. I prefer to install a tripod with a shutter-release cable to ensure that I don’t jolt the camera at all.
