Getting started

Postby stevenjwalters » Wed Jul 15, 2009 12:28 pm

Hello everyone,
I am a photographer who is trying to learn a bit more about web development. Specifically I want to learn how to create portfolio websites for photographers. I like the large Flash websites done by Livebooks (http://www.manginphotography.com, http://www.womenempoweredproject.com/) and by Foliolink (http://www.joelgrimes.com/) but want to have a non-Flash version for SEO and mobile devices. With this in mind, and realizing that it is a very lengthy endeavor, I have a few questions:

1.Is there a way to design similar large portfolio sites without using Flash at all?

2.I have a basic understanding of Flash but am just starting to learn code for the web. What languages and programs will I need to learn in order to provide alternate searchable content that can also be viewed on mobile devices? I am assuming HTML, CSS and a more advanced understanding of Flash. I also assume PHP and AJAX but don't know which one will be more helpful. Any other languages or programs I should learn?

3.What is the best way to go about getting started? I know that there are a lot of ways to get the job done, but I would prefer to learn to do it according to web standards. I have used the training videos from lynda.com in the past and found them helpful. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

The sofware required for webdesign is photoshop. The coding is done in html using css and javascript. To make the website dynammic one has to use server side languages.

To make a website dynammic the languages used are mainly php,asp and sql.Though there are many more languages which one can use to make a website dynammic.

If you are not too good at webdesign then u can contact another person who has good knowledge of web designing.

  • I'd try to build a basic photosite in plain HTML/CSS. There are many HTML beginner tutorials on the internet, so just search Google 8-)
  • http://net.tutsplus.com -> look for PSD to HTML tutorials
  • You can use a jQuery script like thickbox (http://jquery.com/demo/thickbox/) which lets the user view an image in lage size.

Hope that helps to get you started...
Maybe we can talk and not just speak...
