You know, those are both great cameras but obviously the D300 has alot of features compared to the Canon 40D, if you compare the two the dpreview.com-I'd say get the D300, or better yet, how about the D300x ?
Ok, D300x was a joke, it cost ALOT...but you should definitely go with your personal preference. What have you used in the past that you know you are willing to use in the future? Or, what features sound better? Also, like someone else said here on the forum...what feels good in your hand and sounds good to your ears might be the camera for you.
I started out with a Nikon D50, it served well for it's purpose and have since used the Canon 20D, 30D and 5D(which I totally fell in love with) But as I said, you should let that decision be yours alone. Give them both a try if you can...either way, you won't regret what you buy!
