I've worked with Canon for over 7 years and have to say their equipment and quality is rock solid. Since I don't have to bother with fixing anything, I can concentrate on the creative side of things. I've also used Nikon, and of course everyone has their own personal preference.

Remember that whichever one you pick, you'll be building out a library of accessories for that particular brand. Looking at what each brand has to offer in innovative technology, I say Canon for their video capabilities and gorgeous 21 MP like Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

All said, I highly recommend Canon!

I use Canon but between those two it's splitting hairs. When I worked as a photojournalist for daily newspapers it was widely said that the trick in picking an SLR camera was holding it and choose whatever camera model felt best in your hands. You won't go wrong with either of those two choices. jeff

You know, those are both great cameras but obviously the D300 has alot of features compared to the Canon 40D, if you compare the two the dpreview.com-I'd say get the D300, or better yet, how about the D300x ? :D

Ok, D300x was a joke, it cost ALOT...but you should definitely go with your personal preference. What have you used in the past that you know you are willing to use in the future? Or, what features sound better? Also, like someone else said here on the forum...what feels good in your hand and sounds good to your ears might be the camera for you.

I started out with a Nikon D50, it served well for it's purpose and have since used the Canon 20D, 30D and 5D(which I totally fell in love with) But as I said, you should let that decision be yours alone. Give them both a try if you can...either way, you won't regret what you buy!

Well they are just brands you know, the real deal is who uses, and how to maximize their capabilities, as for me, we use a nikon on the agency.

I've tried both Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras and one of the most important things that I realize is that the comfortableness of holding the camera is important! I really like the feel of the Nikon cameras, I currently using a Nikon D50 right now. Before I ever purchased a DSLR camera, I was thinking about getting the Cannon Digital Rebel XTi but when I went to the store and tested it out, I wasn't really comfortable with how it handle.

Anyhow, as most of what everybody said, they are both great cameras and each have their own pros and cons.

Good luck and hope you find the right camera for you soon!

D300 by a MILE! I used a Canon 400D for about 6 months and hated it, switched to the much much cheaper Nikon D40 and it's a dream in comparison. Some day I'll get a D300.. that's the dream camera (for me at least) :D

I personally prefer Nikon but Canon has more positive reviews on the internet....

I guess you should go to a store and try out both of them, check out the features, pic quality and then take a call....

Bingo! I'm a high school art teacher and I've been teaching Digital Photography for 3 years now. I've had to sit through countless arguments about this and I've learned that you can't tell a Canon person that Nikon is better or vice versa. It has nothing to do with the camera and the cool things it can do. It has everything to do with the person who is behind the lens and pressing the button. I have a DSLR and my hubby has a point and shoot (don't ask the brand because I won't tell) and wouldn't you know that my friends and family can't tell the difference between which were shot with the "better" camera and which were the "lesser".

My sister is currently asking the same question and she thinks that price is a big factor as well - the higher the price, the better the pictures. But of course to tell her what I just said is a lie!!! HA!

It's all about the photographer not the camera.
Just wanting to learn...

That's the same question like " Which class is good in Starcraft? "

Point is, canon has minuses and pluses.. nikon has minuses and pluses.
There is not a huge different between two of them.

But in my opinion, you better have emotional relationship between your camera.

First of all, you need to hold canon and take some photos.. and then hold nikon, take some photos.

then prefer.

I use Canon. I picked it based on how it felt in my hand compared to Nikon and I've never regretted my decision.

At the end of the day, it's not the brand that matters, it's what you do with it that counts.

If it will be your first real camera and you're a beginner, branding and model should not be the matter that makes the decision. D40 is a rather heavy piece to carry with you all the time. And being with your camera is the only way what makes a beginner a good photograph. So, I'd recommend to choose a small model like D400/Rebel or something. Considering handling the case there is a difference between D40 and D400.

In other words: Considering the right expose makes a much more difference than the camera model you are using.

Take the one which is cheaper. Save your money for lenses.

I made this decision some years ago, and chose Nikon. Mainly because it (d70s) was bigger (then canon 350d) what I preferred while holding it.

personal preference

Postby Fiskerstrand » Mon Feb 09, 2009 5:39 pm

Its all about personal preference.
Both brands has each their own positive and negative sides. Get to know them and decide after what you think is important.

I´ve been a die-hard-Nikon-user for years now and I can honestly say...there is small, or none, difference between these great brands.

Just like my older brother, who works in Canon and still use Nikon in private. Again, its all about personal preference.
