Anyone Reccomend Any Good Books?

Postby 01chris » Mon Feb 09, 2009 6:18 pm

Can anyone recommend any good books on digital photography?

I'm fine with editing etc on Photoshop it's more the composition/taking of shots in the first place and practical photography tips that I'm interested in.

I'm not looking for anything too simple as I know the basic theory and I know my way around a camera well.

Cheers

I can't think of any books but when I was trying to get into Photography I learnt the most from buying a couple of photography magazines each month and working through the techniques featured in each issue. Photography monthly, Practical Photography and Amature Photographer were the magazines I usually bought.
As with anything, don't just read the article and think you know it, go out and try it.

Agree with linda's first choice, Understanding Exposure is a really good book to have to hand.

I also agree with Understanding Exposure.

I've also heard good things about Light, Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - I will have a flick through those books at a bookshop and make a decision.

Don't read the "technical" books.
Buy books by the Masters of Photography.
Study their works.
Get inspired.

Hi Chris,

I fully agree to Bresler, tnortcutt and Linda. But i would suggest you to go through this book as it teaches you what to think while you are behind the camera peeping in your viewfinder.

This book is called as Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography (Updated Edition) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback) by Bryan Peterson and you can find more details about it here : http://www.amazon.com/Learning-See-Crea ... 961&sr=8-1

I am done with reading this book and i loved it.

Second that - Lovely book !

Only books would not increase your skills by the way. Browse sites like DeviantART (and FlickR), visit galleries, etc and shoot 10,000 photos / month :)

I agree with Steve's suggestion on picking up photography magazines. They're not terribly expensive and it's kinda nice to be able to learn at least one new thing every month. And ehab is right too. Just keep shooting every chance you get - eventually, things will start to click.

I bought "The Digital Photography Book" by Scott Kelby this morning, so I'm looking forward to going through it. I also was suggested this website: http://digital-photography-school.com/ I've only skimmed through it some, but it looks promising.
