Hosting

Postby afro » Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:02 am

If I have a website within the UK and Australia

would you recommend using the hosting providers from the countries above, because currently I use Godaddy and Hostgator ( located in the usa) because it is cheaper.

Would there be a big diffrence in terms of Page speed, and are there benefits of accesing the content when they hosted within the Uk or Australia be of advantage.

Would you just stick with the Godaddy and hostgator providers

Thanks

OK, firstly, I would never host anything with GoDaddy. They're great with domain names but their hosting sucks. I have no experience with Hostgator so I can't comment on them.

Do you mean that your website is aimed at people from the UK and Australia? If so, then having a server in your own country might help - when Google searches locally for e.g. just websites from the UK, it uses a number of factors to determine what a UK site is and one of them is server location. I think. No one's ever quite sure exactly how Google does things.

Hosting in your own country will be faster: the data doesn't have as far to go, but this also depends a bit on the quality of the server.

I personally host my sites in my own country (most of the time) because I know I've got a customer service team I can ring up without it costing me a fortune and because when my hosting company does maintenance, they don't do it at a good time for people in the USA, they do it at a good time for me!

Hosting

Postby mariepoulin » Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:07 pm

Can anyone recommend some good, affordable hosting?
I've been using 3shost for years, and I've had nothing but issues. I went with them because they were cheap, but their customer service is terrible, and on multiple occasions we've been locked out of our own sites, had our email go down, had wonky things happen when they've upgraded their servers...
I need some reliable, affordable hosting. Can anyone make any good recommendations?
Thank you!

http://clook.co.uk - they offer UK and US hosting.
http://dreamhost.com - big company, big name, very popular.
http://site5.com has a mixed reputation.
http://mediatemple.com is often recommended.
http://fusednetwork.com is making a lot of noise at the moment and getting good reviews.

Cheap and good in one package? Yes ... http://www.imhosted.com/
I blame the limitations of plain text!

I have accounts at dreamhost.com, bluehost.com and mediatemple.com ...

Bluehost is pretty fast and very stable internationally, but works just about the same in the US too.
Dreamhost is very fast in the US but acceptable internationally.
Mediatemple is very slow for me (which is weird, because UK is closer the the US), but for the british people works mighty good.

I think you should make some statistics on how your site performs from various countries and then make a decision.
I'm not sure if all the pages of your website are slow (aka the connection itself wastes a lot of time) or if just the content of the website is.

If it's just the content, use a Content delivery network (CDN).

A vote for http://www.pipeten.com/ here. Uk based, not cheap but I always end up coming back to them.
