I have two tech titans - Google and Microsoft - battling each other in the form of giant robots. Can I sketch (i.e. not copy) and then vectorize their logos and trademarks - seen on their bodies?

to see what I'm getting at. This artist is using the tech company logos in his illustration on the Economist cover.

on the Microsoft website I found: Icons are not to be used as "artwork" or design elements.

Please help in this grey area for me

I'm sure the The Economist received permission to use the logos.

You should avoid copyright infringement at all costs.
