Code editors on a mobile phone?

Postby Rask » Wed Sep 02, 2009 4:18 pm

I use my phone quite a lot these days, and I'd like to create bits of code on it. Are there any good editor which work on a phone (Nokia E71 to be precise)?

A FTP connection possibility would be good, so would highlighting. The editor needs to be free too.

Any suggestions welcome. :)

The reason you're having a hard time finding an application for your mobile phone is that no person in their right mind would even consider writing code from a mobile. It's just insane.

With spare time and a QWERTY phone with a reasonably fast connection I don't find it that hard. Oh well. Better luck next time. Thanks for posting anyway. :)

I couldn't find any app for doing that.
But no, you are not crazy for wanting to edit code on the go.

No, but it's insane to do so on a 2x3cm screen with buttons designed for dialling numbers.
So be smart about it and get yourself a laptop instead.

I don't know any code editors, I've got putty on my phone so I can use it to go onto my server and edit stuff with vim. But just like Andy said, its really difficult to use on such a small screen (even with QWERTY) and its very time consuming, even to type one line.

Ignore Andy, I've found myself sometimes thinking of the same thing.

What you could do is write a draft of your code, send it to your email then copy paste it onto your text editor on your computer.
Give me a tweet at: @Kaypearl

Once you go Mac, you never go back.

Respect & thanks.

@FrankRose: Did you have something to say by quoting me or were you basically just agreeing with me?

If you want to edit code on the go I'd say get yourself a netbook. I've got an SSH client on my phone but I wouldn't use it for anything more than switching off my computer or starting up an app on my media computer. It's an exercise in frustration to attempt anything more.
