Do I still take care of IE6? Yes. Do I use CSS hacks for that? No. I do not really consider Conditional comments being CSS hacks but that is a whole new story :)

I hacked in a fix for this bug, but we'll still have to do a real fix later..

I'm always going to hack for IE6 until at the most 3 - 4% of the marketshare belongs to IE6 - that's when I will make it clear I will no longer provide IE6 compliancy...

It seems to be a heated discussion at the moment, all over the web!

Depends if I am willing to compromise design. If not I will take the stylesheet away for IE6 users, they can read everything in black and white. If I feel the design can be adjusted easily enough to work with IE6 then I will.

As GlennTaylor said, it's still a 3-4% market share (mostly from non-private computers such as company networks and public library pc's) and I think it all depends on your target audience. Are you selling a product that absolutely applies to anyone? Make the site IE6 compatible. Are you selling some sort of webdesign tool? The hell with IE6. I do warn all my IE6 users that the browser is unsafe and blah blah blah.. We do need to aim for an IE6-free world..

No, he didn't say that. He said he'll hack for IE6 until it drops under 3-4%.

According to Net Applications who tracks 160 million users online and is therefore the most extensive source of browser statistics we have, the market share as of July 2009 is a whopping 27.21% for Internet Explorer 6.

http://marketshare.hitslink.com/browser ... px?qprid=3

Not even w3schools, as incorrect as their stats are, report a 4% market share. They report 14.9% but that's almost 50% off of the actual market share.

Oops, just a bit sloppy reading, excuse me. My point remains the same though; I think it depends on your target audience.

You guys are still talking about %share and compromising design. I guarantee your boss or client doesn't want to hear that abstract, idealist stuff. The people you serve think in terms of customers and money.

For one of my sites, IE6 users are down to 7%. Each time I see that number drop, I think "Cool, maybe I can drop support for IE6 now?" until I do the math and I see that translates to over hundreds of thousands of users and potentially the loss of millions in sales.

I hate IE6 but I love paychecks

I'm with you Parallax - it's unlikely we are going to be able to drop support for IE6 anytime soon, especially on sites which generate actual revenue. *Sigh*

P.S. Grats on working on a site with over 2 million users (are those monthly stats or yearly? Quite a big difference there). And how do you get the average user on your site to spend $50+? Gotta be a damn good product, cause I can't imagine the % of users who actually buy something online when they visit is even at 50%...

For front-end work, since we have a large audience, we still hack for IE6. For our back-end administrative pages, we no longer develop for IE6. That audience is much smaller and understandable.

I dropped support for IE6 recently. As far as I'm concerned if they're still using IE6 they deserve to have errors. The web needs to move forward and we can't do that if we're still supporting browsers from 2001. The only sites I will make sure are functional in IE6 are corporate sites that absolutely need IE6 support. Otherwise it is a way too costly exercise.

I've completely left IE6 behind.
I think we are the ones that are keeping it alive, and users should know what kind of software they are using. The problem is not showing them the alternatives.

Much of my work is for business clients and sometimes they require compatibility with IE6, so yep... still supporting it. I'm happy to see the "Kill IE6 Movement" gaining momentum though.

Definitely yes, as most of the users in India use Windows XP, which comes with IE6 pre-installed. So there`s no way I can skip it. It takes hell lot of time. Recently (from last month) I started displacing warning message on the website to upgrade the browsers. But the clients don`t like it.
