Tutorials

Postby mjmonserrat » Thu Feb 26, 2009 9:38 pm

I think tutorial of some web techniques is a good content of the smashing book. We can collect some designs and techniques from the previous articles of smashing magazine, It will be very useful for the reader if will use a tutorial. Much better if it has a companion cd which contains sample codes.... For example, how to incorporate mootools in your website to create a modern design (i.e animation, menu, and special effects on the site). Most subscribers of Smashing Magazine knows mootools but few of them can make their own codes (incorporated with mootools) to make an effect in their sites. But of course, we should not limit the content on mootools only (just an example)

I agree on that, it is nice if the readers of the smashing book will enhance their skills in every chapter

Some handy basic tutorials are a good idea but more on techniques not just html or photoshop i think more like thumb rules tutorials. Like how do you improve your inspiration brainstroming, mindmapping, moodboards more the basic stuff.
Photoshop and HTML etcetera change a lot and the topics are to big to cover in one book. Steps you go true when your designing for the web / print or code planning techniques etcetera .

Greetings Trisox ;)

I agree with Trisox. And I hope what I'm about to say makes sense, if it doesn't let me know.

I wouldn't put full on tutorials in it because that's something you can always find on the web. Plus a book is something you can take with you anywhere, I want information that's relative to me and where I am.

For example if I'm reading the Smashing Book on an airplane or train, it's not practical for the book to all the sudden start talking specifically about how to do something graphic wise in photoshop/illustrator because I can't practice that at the moment I'm in. But if the book demonstrates ideas, rules, practices, techniques, tips, etc then that's relative because I can adopt that way of thinking in that moment.

That probably made no sense. Heh.

I think that make perfect sense, and illustrates yet another reason that technology-specific tutorials should be limited. I love the fact that I always come away from an SM post with knowledge that I can carry on, and I'm sick of tutorials elsewhere that simply walk you through how to do one thing in one piece of software with no theory at all.

I don't know if "tutorial" is the term to use, but it's well its worth considering different methods of teaching your principles. While this guide may not be a tutorial, its step-by-step approach facilitates learning about the principles of typography most effectively - by the looks of it.
