Some suggestions

Postby N.D.A » Mon Jun 22, 2009 8:55 pm

It's great to hear that a printed version of Smashing Magazine is comming. I've just read the news this morning and then I got some ideas. The book will be printed completely in color so some PS tutorials will make it look awesome. Another thing is that many people are using PS, they are looking for great tutorials to practice, including some tutorials will help you sell more copies. The last thing, this book seems to be a book for designer so PS must be an essential part of the book.

Smashing Magazine is great but it's just written in English. Why not building a team to translate to another languages ? Let's spreading the world !

This is the second time you've requested this and you've already been told no.

English is more or less a lingua franca and I would find it that the vast majority of people in our line of business has little or no problem reading English. It would therefore be somewhat pointless in translating these articles (especially since they don't age well).

May be you don't understand my idea. It's just a suggestion. I don't request translating these articles, espeacially for free. I'm suggesting a cooperation. You can read Smashing Magazine in English, why not in Chinese, Vietnamese or other languages ? I just want to help Smashing spread the world. English is popular but not all people in the world knows English, do you understand. I have that suggestion b/c in my country, many people don't know English. Even if the know, they will prefer reading a magazine written in their language, it'll much more easy for them to follow the contents.

Now I'm going to take a university entrance examination so I don't have time for my idea. But I can tell you that I'm building a team to make my dream come true. One day, you will see a Vietnamese version of Smashing Magazine or a magazine like that. If you love your country, your people and want to bring something new, something useful to them, you will understand what I'm talking.

Another thing, Smashing Team didn't say NO, you said so. :P

I'm basically just reiterating what Andy has said, like it or not, English is the de facto language of the internet. Therefore it doesn't really make much 'business sense' to me, although you could argue the case for Chinese/Mandarin (for book publication). Also I don't know if you have ever looked at a technical book that has been translated before but usually the quality of the translation is not great when it comes to technical topics.

If you are in this industry then the chances are you already have a very good grasp of English. Its not just the internet, pretty much all international business is done in English, if you need a translation then you have to get it yourself, it sucks but that's the way it is and there probably isn't a better solution.

Plus, the people who would buy the book must be designers who are really passionate about their work.

And people who are passionate about their work must be passionate enough to learn English because of (oh, come on!) obvious reasons.

This book would not be bought just for fun or to waste money.
