Well, what do you think if we start to do a list with the arguments? Links and resources can help us to make a better work...

SEM (search engine marketing) needs to be addressed in the very early stages of the life of any website. Most of the SEO is not particularly complicated (title tags, keyword density, basic link building strategy, sitemaps) and should at least be considered; I think a few pages on "what to do" vs "what not to do" with basic bullet points should do the trick.

SEO has to have its space on the book specially since each one of us tried to build something on the web.

but SEO is marketing - NOT web design. or should the book be full of tutorials on email campaigns and banner advertising strategies and PPC too?

Yea it actually should. Marketing is a very fog mirror for many, including me. I know that keywords are the basic of SEO. But just saying this isn't helping. How do i do marketing at keywords, how do i know a website will work, how do i know what are the trends. How do i do online marketing for websites?

You're totally missing the point, Smashing Magazine isn't about marketing, so it shouldn't have a place in the book.

I think you miss it.

Smashing Magazine is about Webadministrators/owners/designers. Marketing is a vital topic for 2/3 of those people. I'm not talking about marketing about marketing, but about website-centered e-marketing. I think you are just saying that SM isn't about that because you have no need for it.

Saro I've worked in the SEO industry for 4 years with some of the most high profile names and agencies around - the last SEO company that I worked for TRAINED people at SEOMoz. That should tell you enough about my "need for it".

If you're saying that SM is about SEO, fine - show me links to the 3 most recent articles about SEO published by SM pls.

Re: SEO

These are our seven steps that we use for our clients SEO:

Step 1 Beginning the process We begin by verifying your website with the w3c consortium, making sure that all of the code is valid and has the ability to be referenced by the major search engines so that prospective customers can search for you. The World Wide Web Consortium is responsible for creating standards and guidelines for the Internet; if you like, you can visit their site at http://www.w3.org to verify your website before contacting us. Once we have given your website a thorough check, we correct all coding errors and replace code that does not conform to the w3c protocols.

Step 2 Placement in direct correspondence with Google, MSN / Bing, Yahoo, & Safari Submitting your website to the manual crawl for the major search engines does not help direct traffic toward your site or help prospective customers find your business. Our technique begins by hand-coding a specialized XML file and positioning it in the root of your web directory; we also create a geographical version called a KML. These specialized files map pathways to each page and all of the information contained within your website. These files continue to update and change as you update and change the information on your site: You remain in direct correspondence with Google, MSN/Bing, Yahoo, and Safari. Google holds 71% of all search engine requests, while MSN/Bing, Yahoo, and Safari hold the remaining share.

Step 3 Competitor research & keyword mapping We evaluate your competitors search engine traffic, click-through rates, impressions, and, most importantly, their keywords. Next, we take the most result-wielding keywords and assign them to different areas of your site, matching the keywords to the appropriate pages for the relativity protocols that search engines follow. These keywords are placed into titles, meta tags, text, headings, and image/media alt tags. Saturating your site with carefully selected keywords will propel your website to a position above your competitors.

Step 4 Directory submissions to DMOZ/ Yahoo including link-backs with keyword anchors We select the word or phrase that people use to link to your website we submit it to DMOZ/Yahoo directories. Over a short amount of time, this method will increase your website’s relevance with Google and all other search engines by 1000%.

Step 5 Specialized link developments Developing specialized links with other websites that compliment your field is important in securing your website a prominent position in the digital marketplace. We complete this piece of the puzzle by forming networking connections with other companies whose products or services compliment your business.

Step 6 Getting the word out fast We create industry specific articles and place them strategically in social networks of credibility and credible trade related networks and forums that compliment your business’s products or services.

Step 7 Seeing it through After completing steps 1 through 6, we follow-up with an onsite consultation in order to set up a control panel that allows you to monitor the daily results of your website with “live” content analysis. Ask us about our iPhone application which allows you to monitor your website’s productivity from your mobile device. As part of our complete Digital Marketing Package we follow up with all of our clients at 14 days, 30 days, and 45 days. At each checkpoint, we evaluate your digital marketing progress and perform any adjustments or fine-tuning that may be needed to maximize results. Our experience has thought us that fine-tuning is essential to laying a Digital Marketing foundation which brings rock-solid results month after month as your business grows.
