Here's my quickly done idea. I started a different thread where I posted this and it was suggested to me to post here... so, here it is. :D

 . But I think this should be the back.

While, this:

should be the front. Or a tag cloud with words describing what SM, oops, SB is all bout will do.

I don't think this really relates to SM's theme. This looks very classy, while it's a great for classic jazz cafes or the like.

I think the text outside of the "S" should be grayer because it's a bit distracting. But, gosh, the 2nd image really showed the cover's potential.

Yes! There should be a tag line at the bottom!

Btw, the cover should be matte not glossy, it'd be a lot sleeker this way.

Thanks for the comment Kayperl, but I already created a grayer outside of the "S" but it is more distracting. That's why I decided to convert the gray to white... it is more distracting if there is too many colors in the cover (in my design's case), specially inside the meta tags

@mjmonserrat

I like your design very much. I'm extremely new to this design idea.. was wondering if you could let me know how you did that effect on the front of the book with the meta tags?

Thanks

Thanks, If you are familiar with adobe photoshop, you can create that effect by masking layers. If you are not familiar with masking layers, there are several tutorials online on how to do it.

I want the back cover with some dedication of smashing magazine. The dedication should contain short description how the book constructed and some sort of aknowledgement to those people involved in developing the book.

Below is the front and back cover plotted in a book:

This backcover looks exactly the same as the layout of Peter Gabriel's
'Growing up' tour, DVD and CD...

Just thought i would add a small contribution to the effort

Image

I feel this is a starting point - good introduction of typography would improve i.e. instead of the images' background being white, possibly we could incorporate a broadsheet newspaper effect.

I had an idea to I tried to quickly visualize:

Image

The idea is that the square in the top center is actually cut out (I tried to visualize that with some shadows) and the smashing S is printed on the page below.
If you open the book you can look through the cover square. I don't know how easy this would be to realize, as well with an eye on the production costs.

I tried to make my point a little more clear with this image:

The whole thing might look like this:

Besides that: Congratulations to all the other designs, there is some amazing stuff here.

REALLY! I didn't know that... I don't even know Peter Gabriel... he he he. Will post that cover for me so that I can figure it out if it's EXACTLY THE SAME as my design because I only found these images on the internet and I think this is not the image you are referring to:

What I'm getting from this idea is part of the page glossy and part of it frosted, which I love. :D

Nitin Garg's and Carls designs are the best so far, IMO.
