Thanks.

I'm not good in writing tutorials and I only use Adobe Photoshop CS2. I suggest you search in your favorite search engine about tutorial for transforming layers using adobe photoshop this will help you to bend your flat image into different shapes that will give a 3D effect on the image, try to search topic related to masking layers, this will help you to create relections of the book. You should try also to study the Blending Options of the layer. This will help you to create shadows on your book. All skills you need to master is Transforming layers, If you already know how to transform layers, I assure you that you can render your draft into 3D

Thanks for the pointers. I didn't want to hijack this forum topic. I just wasn't sure if you have done it in Photoshop by "hand" or used some other software. After posting my question I did a little research and found this software: http://www.boxshot3d.com/ $60.00 maybe a little steep for me at the moment, but I may justify it for some future project.

Yah, I did it by hand... there is no "one-click" feature in photoshop wherein you will get the entire 3d effect.

Since I've first seen this topic I wanted to submit some designs but I just didn't have the time until just now. So, here is what I've come up with . . .
001. copy_resize.jpg
This is my first design ... I've put a little more work into it but at the end I found it a little too colorful and complicated for a book cover.

002 copy_resize.jpg
A simpler more suited design for the smashing cover

Personally from what I have seen so far I think briannelsondesign your design with the big orange 'S' is clean simple and the colors really stand out. Static44 I also think your on to something with the smashing...perhaps a bit of a obvious solution given the title of the book but I like what I am seeing so far, and motd I also like the simplicity of your black design only thing that I don't like about it is the white text at the top otherwise it's looking good. keep up the good work guys.

I think that some simple design with few different tones of orange and red would work the best...

Or it can be just a white DIY cover with a place in the middle (around 70% of the front cover) with some normal writeable paper on which you can make/design/draw/paint/print your own cover... thats a thing that I've never seen before and it'd be pretty cool...

btw, here is a simple sketch of how can the DIY cover look like: [img=http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/3661/smashingbookcoversketch.th.jpg]

btw2: do you know where can I find a hi-res smashing mag logo? there was one link here but it is not working any more...

I like the concept of some writable paper on witch you can make notes and designs, but it's not quite fitted for the front cover. Maybe for the back cover or at least some white pages included in the book.

btw: always nice to see someone quoting themselves :)
