Here's just a rough idea for a cover. I usually go with the first idea that pops into my head (good or bad ) and work from there, so here it is. I've got more ideas bouncing around and I really like some of the suggested ideas in the other forum threads.

For this design I went with more of a minimalist look combined with the splatter grunge effect. I know we all like the idea of some color on the cover so each splatter is a different color to try to represent the many different ideas, topics and people that come from and contribute to Smashing Magazine.

I'm looking forward to seeing what people think and brainstorming with everyone.

I like what you're going for eweiand, I love the paint and the minimalism. I'm not sure if it's the font you've used but it looks as though you've written BOOk instead of BOOK. Also, I feel that your inner shadow and bevel is a bit too dark.

By the way, it might be a good idea to post your cover design art in this thread, it will be easier for others to browse through them, and you'll probably get more feedback.

You're right, it looks like I fat-fingered the K at the end of "book". I tend to get too excited when the ideas start coming in and overlook things like that. That's what I get for not slowing down and looking things over.

I agree with your comment about the inner shadow and the bevel. Also, thanks for the heads-up about the other thread, I'll rework this, fix the K and post it over there.
